Slider Window Repair How To Remove The Sash
Hello, everybody! This is Dennis from Home Rehab Pros. I’m glad you’re joining us today. It’s just a simple task that I wanted to show you, about a vinyl window, that the pane in the window is cracked, and we need to replace it. In order to do that, you have to take the sash out. On these sliding windows–this is a sliding window–it’s not difficult to do that. In fact, we’re gonna show you how to do it. We’re not going to get the glass fixed–we’re going to show you how to take the sash out, how to put the sash back in, once the glass is replaced, uh, and, you can see that you can do this yourself. And have a glass company repair the glass. So, let’s get started! Let’s show you how we do this.
So here is the window. You can see it is a slider, and the sash on the left side, where the tree is, that’s fixed, so that doesn’t move. But the sash on the right side, it does, and you can see that the pane of glass there is broken and we really need to get that taken care of and fixed. Now this works, uh, when the seal has been compromised you can take the sash out and take it to a window company, or if just the glass is cracked like that you can take it out and take it to a glass company and they’ll fix it. So let me show you how we just take that sash out and put it back in, and you’ll be surprised how easy it is.
So the first thing you want to do is unlock it. And this has some simple locks, I’m not gonna show you the locks, you just, unlock, and you’ll see how that works. You just slam it and it locks itself. So basically, with a slider, and this is true with most sliders, that this sash is of course fixed and it doesn’t slide at all. But I want to take this out of the unit and take it to a glass company. So watch how simple it is, for me to take this out and put it back in. Just keep an eye on it. It just lifts, swings out, and drops out the jamb. Most sliders are that simple. Let me show you the close-up.
You can see there's a channel here. Ok? And that slides back and forth in that channel. There’s also a channel up top, and I’ll show you that in a couple minutes. But all this really does is lift up and clears that channel. Ok? That’s all it does! And then it just slides out that top channel. Let me show you the top channel.
See here’s the top of my window, right here. And it fits into the channel that’s right here. And when I lift this window up, there’s enough room in that channel for this window to go up, just enough, so that it clears this channel, down here. And so that’s how we get our window. Let me, uh, take that sash out, and I’ll show you that upper channel. Very simple. Set it down, and now let me show you that upper channel without the sash. See there it is. There’s that upper channel. So that top of that sash fits right into that channel, and that’s how that works. Very simple. Very simple. So now let me put the sash back in, and, ‘cause I’m not ready to take it to the glass repair house, or store, but, uh, that way you’ll see how it’s all done.
So we’re just gonna put the sash back in. I’m not ready to take it to get repaired yet, so it slides right in that top, top channel. It’s all the way up there, clears that bottom channel, and now it’s ready to lock. So there you go. So again, this is Dennis with Home Rehab Pros. Just a small instruction on how to deal with, perhaps a broken seal. You know it gets all smoky, and it looks like there’s, uh, moisture inside, between the two glass panes there, the seal’s broken and you wanna get that repaired and you have a slider. It’s not even hard to do that with a double hung either. But, uh, there you go, how to do it with a slider. Or if the pane gets broken and you want to take the whole sash out. You can cover that with plastic or put a little plywood over it when you take that to the glass company, but that works. So this is Dennis with Home Rehab Pros, if you’ve ever encountered that, or you have windows like that and you haven’t known how to fix them, it’s easy peasy, man. In fact, I know you can do that project if you have to. Just identify a good, professional glass company and they’ll fix that glass on their side and then you pick it up, bring it back and just pop it right back in that opening.
