There are a LOT of suggestions on how to repair this problem. This is my way of doing it. It has worked for me for years. It works with any quick set mud. I use 5 minute in the video, but it will work just as nicely with 20, 45, or 90 minute. Use the mud that works best for you as long as it is quickset. THANKS FOR WATCHING.

Repair Torn Drywall Paper in One Hour
Alright, today we are going to demonstrate a technique for fixing areas on a wall. Often, people suggest using lacquer paint or Kilz to address these issues, particularly when dealing with loose brown paper, but I'll show you an alternative method using mesh tape and Durabond 5. The problem here stemmed from the removal of glued trim around an old window, which pulled off some of the surface paper. I'll scrape off any loose material without disturbing what's already adhered.
Now, let's move over to this area. The key is to remove any loose debris from the surface. When working with mesh tape, you can choose to use Fiberfuse, but avoid using paper tape. I'll opt for mesh tape and cover the entire affected section, overlapping it slightly—around an eighth to a quarter inch.
Next, I'll apply Durabond 5. Using a six-inch knife, I'll spread the Durabond over the mesh tape, feathering the edges. Excess mud can be wiped off if desired, as the main goal is to secure the mesh tape in the Durabond.
After the first coat, I'll speed up the process by using a hairdryer on the surface. This will help the Durabond set faster. You'll notice that as it dries, it turns white.
For the second coat, I'll apply a thin layer of Durabond, feathering it on both ends and wiping off any excess. I'll repeat this process for each section, using the hairdryer again to accelerate the drying.
For the third and final coat, I'll apply a thin amount of Durabond, feathering the edges and wiping off excess mud as before. After applying the hairdryer again to expedite drying, I'll lightly sand the edges to ensure a smooth finish that's ready for painting.
In conclusion, we've shown you how to fix a damaged wall using mesh tape and Durabond. This technique can be completed relatively quickly, and you can choose to use Durabond 20 if Durabond 5 feels challenging to work with. With a bit of effort, you can achieve a smooth surface ready for painting.
Remember, the key steps are:
That wraps up our repair process. You can now proceed to paint the patched area.
