This old deck has deteriorated and it's just better to tear it down and replace it with new wood deck. It's really the back porch for this house. Watch as Jason uses the right tools and take the right approach to taking this old concrete deck out of the way.
If you have a similar project take note of the safety PPE that Jason is using. Also not the tools that we used on this. The 20 LB demolition hammer can be rented at most rental centers.

How to Remove a Concrete Deck
Hello, this is Dennis from Home Rehab Pros. Today, we have quite a task ahead of us. We are going to tackle the removal of a concrete back deck and clear the area to make way for a new wood deck. While we won't be constructing the deck today due to permit requirements, we will watch Jason demonstrate the proper tools and safety measures for removing the concrete deck.
Let's introduce our crew. You may have seen them in other videos. This is Jeffrey, who has experience installing toilets and fixing chipped ceramic tiles. And this is Jason, who has expertise in painting countertops and other tasks. However, he did need to repaint after our previous video. Today, our focus is on tearing out this concrete landing. It's all concrete, and we're using a sledgehammer and other tools for the job.
We will replace the concrete with a matching wood deck, but the construction will happen later, as we need to secure permits and ensure everything is in order. Now, let's observe Jason as he takes a safe and precise approach to remove the concrete deck.
Jason, could you please explain the tool you're using for breaking up the concrete?
Jason: Of course, I'm using a 20-pound percussion hammer, not a hammer drill. We have a chisel bit attached, and my approach is to make a cut along this joint to weaken the concrete. Then, with the help of a sledgehammer, we can break it apart.
Dennis: I see you're targeting the support system last. Can you explain this strategy?
Jason: Absolutely, we want to make sure the deck is completely removed before tackling the support system, both at the front and back of the deck.
Dennis: Perfect, let's see how you proceed.

Jason: As you can see, we've made good progress weakening the concrete along this line. Now, I'll use the 20-pound sledgehammer to break it apart further.

Dennis: Great job, Jason. It's essential to prioritize safety with the right protective gear, given how concrete shards fly around.
Jason: Absolutely, safety is a top priority.
[Video footage: Jason continues breaking the concrete]
Dennis: You've done a significant job, Jason. Your technique with the sledgehammer and letting its weight do the work is effective.
Jason: Thank you, Dennis. This concrete is quite thick, about six inches, but using the suspended position helps.
[Video footage: Jason further breaking the concrete]
Dennis: Well done, Jason. The concrete is coming apart nicely.
Jason: Thank you.
[Video footage: Concrete breaking and debris removal]
Dennis: The removal process is looking good. It's impressive to witness the progress.
Jason: Thank you. Now, I'll start clearing the debris into the dumpster.
Dennis: Excellent work, Jason. The next step will be part two, where we'll showcase the construction of the new wood deck. Thanks for watching, and if you enjoyed this video, please subscribe and share it with others. Until next time, this is Dennis from Home Rehab Pros.
